Amarante: my view across the square
(Oil on paper on board, 7" x 14" approx.)

Late in 2007 I travelled to Lisbon to get to know the city and culture which inspired Fernando Pessoa to write The Book of Disquiet.

Travelling further north I found myself in Amarante, birthplace of one of the founders of the Portuguese modernist movement, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.

I fell in love with Lisbon, Portugal, a girl in a Lisboan bookshop and finally the fantastic collection of Souza-Cardoso's work in Amarante museum gallery, which inspired this painting.
